Professional Standards

At OPI, our mission is to build a corruption-resistant culture within Victoria Police and to advance ethical and professional policing in the Victorian community.

We ensure that Victoria Police maintains the highest ethical and professional standards via the following strategies:

• auditing and reviewing policies and procedures
• overseeing misconduct and corruption investigations undertaken by the Ethical Standards Department of Victoria Police
• taking complaints about police conduct
• monitoring complaint-handling practices within Victoria Police
• educating police about the importance of community complaints

Our reports, which are tabled in the Victorian Parliament, detail the results of our investigations into serious misconduct or corruption; or the outcomes of our reviews into Victoria Police policies, practices or procedures.

The reports often result in recommendations to Parliament or the Victoria Police, with the aim of helping Victoria Police better serve the community in an accountable and appropriately transparent manner. Our register of these recommendations is audited regularly to monitor actions taken in response.
