Human Rights

The Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (the Charter) is legislation designed to protect the human rights of Victorians. The Charter ensures that when the government makes laws and delivers services, it does so compatibly with the rights set out in the Charter.

The Director’s obligations in respect of Human Rights are:

  • To ensure that members of Victoria Police have regard to the human rights set out in the Charter.
  • To ensure that all OPI personnel act in a way that is compatible with human rights or, in making a decision, give proper consideration to relevant human rights.
