Complaints about police

Complaints have an important role to play in providing public accountability for the work of Victoria Police. They may also provide an opportunity to improve police-community relationships.

Complaints can improve ethical and professional standards, expose defects in training or policies and procedures, or provide opportunities for individuals to learn from their mistakes.

OPI can resolve complaints through conciliation, investigation or referral to Victoria Police. Under the Police Integrity Act 2008, OPI must refer most complaints warranting investigation to Victoria Police. In this sense, OPI is not like a traditional ombudsman’s office.

You can make a complaint about the conduct of a member of Victoria Police to OPI or Victoria Police, or to both organisations. You can also make a complaint about a former member of Victoria Police if the conduct you are complaining about occurred when the person was a serving member.
