Office of Police IntegrityThe Office of Police Integrity (OPI) is an independent police anti-corruption and oversight body. OPI's role is to make sure that Victoria Police maintains the highest ethical and professional standards. OPI detects, investigates and prevents police corruption and serious misconduct. OPI also looks at police practices and procedures to make sure they are effective. To ensure Victoria Police continues to meet community expectations, OPI monitors and reviews the way Victoria Police investigates or conciliates complaints. OPI reports direct to Parliament. Through education, research and working with Victoria Police, OPI develops and implements corruption resistant strategies to reduce the risk of corruption and serious misconduct. An independent statutory officer, the Special Investigations Monitor, oversees OPI's use of investigative powers. Mr Michael Strong, a former Judge of the County Court, is the current Director, Police Integrity. Promoting Integrity Awareness - A Kit for FacilitatorsOPI has produced a kit for facilitating a group activity, Promoting Integrity Awareness. The aim of this kit is to provide information, processes and materials to support a range of facilitators to conduct workshops within their local workplace with the overall intent of building corruption resistance. Key components of the workshops are to help people identify their personal decision-making biases, encourage the identification of differing perspectives in relation to conduct and misconduct, and to engage in debate and discussion in a non-threatening environment. The activity is designed to encourage reflection on the alignment between participants’ own understanding and awareness of misconduct and that proposed in legislation. |
Improving Victorian policing services through effective complaint handlingThis report, tabled in Parliament by the Director, Police Integrity, Michael Strong, reviews the alternative dispute resolution system known as the Management Intervention Model (MIM) used to resolve a large number of complaints against police.
